5 of 12 Great Things I Found at Raleigh
By Lorraine • Oct 4th, 2009 • Category: PlantsThere were so many plants, both in the gardens we toured and in the exhibit halls where growers were showing off their latest and greatest, that it was difficult to narrow down the list of most lusted-after plants for this series of blog postings. But I just couldn’t take my eyes off…
5. Mahonia ‘Soft Caress’
Okay, if you thought I was crazy to write about Euphorbia ‘Ascot Rainbow’ because it’s hardy only to USDA Zone 5, you’ll hate me for highlighting Mahonia ‘Soft Caress’, which is “officially” hardy to USDA Zone 7. But once you’ve seen it, you’ll know why I’m willing to try it as a pot plant here in Toronto, which is a full zone colder. First, ‘Soft Caress’ takes part to full shade, and as a city gardener hemmed in by neighouring trees, I’m always on the lookout for plants that perform under those conditions. Second, its lacy bamboo-like leaves are made for touching (it’s not called ‘Soft Caress’ for nothing, folks!). In the spring, it produces bright yellow flowers – bonus. I’m going to try overwintering it under lights in my basement and then plant it up in a container, which I’ll place in the shadiest spot of my woodland garden next spring. Wish me luck!

It is a lovely plant that certainly peaked my interest a few weeks ago when I noticed it at a local nursery. It was in bloom, yes, but the foliage is really the showcase. I think it will be an excellent container plant for you and I also feel like it could behave like Nandina domestica and do well as a foundation planting on the north side of a building!
Hi Riz,
Thanks for the advice about growing ‘Soft Caress’. I have a great spot for it on the north side of my house.
Love your photo gallery of the GWA symposium, too!
Cheers,
Lorraine
This is a great post, Thanks!
